Fujitsu and VPSwitch Announce DSL Alliance

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited (Fujitsu), the leading supplier of high performance telecommunications solutions, announces an alliance with VPSwitch - a division of Data Connection Limited (DCL) - to provide emulated voice and data services over DSL. The new agreement focuses on combining Fujitsu's DSL product range with VPSwitch technology, to provide the key combination of voice and data services over DSL-enabled bandwidth, and realise the full potential of the expanding deregulated telecommunications environment.

The alliance with VPSwitch further strengthens Fujitsu's position as a leading provider of broadband solutions, with one of the most comprehensive broadband portfolios in the marketplace. Network operators will benefit from this alliance through deployment of the VP3000 Integrated DSL Voice Switch, from the VPSwitch family. With end users connected to the VP3000 via an Integrated Access Device and ATM-over-DSL connection, new and incumbent operators can trade voice traffic back to the PSTN via an SS7 trunk interface.

Marc Curtis, Director of Network Vision, Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe, commented: "The capability of VPSwitch to provide Central Office bypass is critical to ensuring the rapid uptake of Voice over DSL solutions as competition gathers pace in Europe. The addition of the VP3000 facilitates Fujitsu's solutions for next-generation network applications and enables us to add emulated voice services to our interactive digital services bundle, whilst removing the obstacle of inflexible, embedded Class 5 switch solutions."

Fujitsu is a founding member of the Multi-service Switching Forum (www.msforum.org), and has made a key contribution in defining the architecture for next-generation network solutions. Employing the principles of MGCP/Megaco and SCTP, the VPSwitch family can evolve - from a trunk voice gateway interacting with the PSTN - to incorporate Call Agents, SoftSwitching or service platforms. Many features can be deployed via software revisions - via common APIs - a key advantage over legacy embedded switch solutions.

"The VPSwitch VP3000 is a compelling solution for DSL Service Providers, enabling incumbents and competitive entrants to deploy VoDSL over existing lines at a new low price point," said John Lazar, Director of VPSwitch Marketing. "We aim to be a major player in this space - and will be increasingly visible as we start trials and deployments."
