Fujitsu Enhances DSL Capacity with STM-4c Market First

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd, the leading supplier of high performance telecommunications solutions, continues to set new standards for DSL performance, introducing the market's first STM-4c Network Interface, for operation with Fujitsu's multi-service FDX DSL Access Concentrator DSLAM platform. Currently providing the highest achievable density within the most cost-efficient package, Fujitsu's DSL design philosophy provides operators with a flexible, scalable and efficient means of meeting customer demand for increased DSL bandwidth - as fuelled by DSL-delivered television programming, video-on-demand and lease line services.

With the availability of the STM-4c Network Interface, Fujitsu's FDX solution offers improved support for fast Internet connections and Voice-over-DSL services using multiple voice channels. Video applications, as well as point-to-point 2Mbps lease-line services, benefit from the increased network capacity offered by the STM-4c interface, enabling fast and economic deployment. Using Fujitsu's scalable technology, and with minimum investment, operators and service providers are now able to offer customers multi-service bundled packages at competitive rates, with the consumer and business sectors both able to benefit, and continue to drive the demand for further bandwidth.

Ivan Sallows, Product Planning Manager DSL Solutions of Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd, commented: "This launch of our STM-4c Network Interface for the FDX DSL solution underlines its capabilities as a truly multi-service, multi-platform system - and as part of its pre-launch testing, we successfully operated the STM-4c interface with an impressive rack wall of almost 2000 modems. The prime role of FDX is to make life as easy as possible for operators and service providers, by ensuring that a single modular system can be scaled according to demand - allowing the maximum number of customers to be provided with the greatest choice of services. Backed by its traffic management and shaping capabilities, FDX is a powerful option and reinforces Fujitsu's position as a major provider of broadband solutions."

The new STM-4c interface provides the necessary back-haul efficiencies into the core network, using the advanced traffic management and shaping capabilities of Fujitsu's FDX system to maximise support for the largest number of customers, and ensure the optimum use of both the core transmission bandwidth and the exchange or hostel floor space. Potentially, through subtending nearly 10,000 customers can be supported from a single network interface. These aspects contribute further to an operator's ability to trade effectively and profitably in the highly competitive broadband services market.

Fujitsu's FDX DSL Access Concentrator

The FDX DSL Access Concentrator forms part of Fujitsu's market-leading broadband access equipment, developed to provide network operators with a choice of high-performance access solutions. As a modular platform, FDX allows operators to build the optimum size of DSLAM for each application, with line cards being added as required. FDX supports both ADSL (dmt/G.lite) and SDSL (G.shdsl) technology, with evolution to the emerging VDSL standards. The FDX platform complements Fujitsu's range of access multiplexers, the FBX-Access SDH platform, and the FBX-DSL - the first SDH-based HDSL system. Fujitsu's FDX provides xDSL access via the copper infrastructure, with services concentrated using the ATM switch. This also provides VC priority-based queuing, VP shaping, flexible QoS and congestion control for network and user traffic. The modularity of the FDX makes it possible to expand the network interface rate from STM-1 to STM-4. A software-download capability enables remote upgrades, and all the key system features can be configured, maintained and managed remotely by Fujitsu's well-established Access Network Management System - FLEXR-EM/AC.

Key FDX features include:

  • Multi-service DSL platform, supporting business and residential services
  • Supports simultaneous operation of ADSL, G.shdsl and VDSL line cards for future upgrades
  • Flexible, modular architecture, making deployment cost-effective in a wide range of Geotypes
  • Ultra-high density, using minimum exchange floor space
  • Compatible with a wide range of Customer Premised Equipment
  • Supports evolution to emulated legacy services
