Opening up the Access Network with Fujitsu

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited, the leading supplier of high performance telecommunications solutions, is anticipating the unbundling of the UK telecommunications network in July 2001 with the unveiling of its scalable Multi-Service Access Network solution. Based on Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology, Fujitsu's platform is designed to provide operators with the flexibility they need to take advantage of the new unbundled environment. At its core is the FBX-D access concentrator - capable of delivering a range of xDSL technologies to fulfil a variety of service requirements, enabling operators to utilise the existing copper infrastructure to the maximum advantage in conjunction with the roll-out of new services and provision of more bandwidth.

Fujitsu's xDSL Multi-Service Access Network solution caters for the following:

Asymmetric DSL (ADSL)
Suitable for long-reach, highly asymmetric applications, ADSL is the ideal entry-level technology for exchange-located access concentrators, offering fast Internet and video services to homes and small businesses.

Symmetric DSL (SDSL, HDSL and VDSL)
More suited to medium-reach end-users, Fujitsu's range of symmetric DSL technology allows the introduction of many more voice and data lines to small businesses or home workers, who might currently employ ISDN or lower-bandwidth leased lines for their data requirements.

Customer Premises Equipment (CPE)
A key component of the successful deployment of multiple services, Fujitsu's home-hubs and Integrated Access Devices (IADs) complement an existing range of xDSL consumer equipment. Using standard interfaces (telephony sockets, 100BaseT Ethernet, ATM-25 and USB), Fujitsu's multi-service solution can be adapted to the needs of residential customers, home workers, small businesses and larger branch offices.

Voice and Media Gateways
A range of solutions, comprising voice, data and ISP gateways in line with the need to integrate solutions with legacy voice and data services.

Understanding the needs of new operators and the opportunities afforded by new technology is central to a successful strategy in the evolving competitive arena. Fujitsu is a key supplier in the current deployment of xDSL technology in the UK network - implementing ADSL systems in over 200 exchanges, as part of the first phase of BT's Broadband Network roll-out. Fujitsu's product strategy is clearly focused on the creation of core strategic solutions, designed to maximise the use of the available bandwidth through technologies such as xDSL. A leading player in the international standards arena, Fujitsu is able to provide a range of fully integrated voice and data solutions for future new carrier networks. These can encompass system and subsystem supply, integration, or a complete turnkey field operation - including the installation, commissioning and management of access and transmission lines plus equipment. Complementing this product strategy for the unbundled environment is Fujitsu's partnership with Porta Systems Corp. (AMEX:PSI) of Syosset, NY, USA, involving the company's Single Ended Line Qualification System. This is used to pre-qualify the viability of broadband delivery over copper networks, in line with the baseline requirements for the introduction of broadband services over the existing copper access infrastructure. By pre-qualifying lines for broadband capability, the network's value to the network operator can be significantly increased.
