Telecommunications Europe Limited Announces Multi-Million Dollar DSL
Agreement with Westell
Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited (FTEL), the leading supplier
of high performance telecommunications solutions, announces the
expansion of its strategic alliance with Westell Technologies, Inc.
(NASDAQ: WSTL), in order to meet its growing international demand
for DSL products and services. The two companies are augmenting
their existing arrangement for network/central office equipment
and Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), driven by FTEL's increasing
success in the international market for DSL solutions, and supported
by the breadth of Westell Technologies' DSL designs, technologies
and capabilities.
FTEL is increasing its level of commitment to Westell's DSL technology,
and will continue sponsoring certain Westell DSL developments through
2001, with Westell also becoming FTEL's principal provider of Universal
Serial Bus (USB) modems for the period of this agreement. As part
of this unique, powerful alliance, FTEL will continue to utilise
and license Westell's technology, while driving Westell's manufacturing
capabilities in support of its growing global demand for broadband
products. Additionally, FTEL and Westell will market their DSL solutions
jointly, to the companies' international customer base.
The long-term alliance, which includes end-to-end solutions, is
designed to enable FTEL to achieve world-class DSL capabilities,
while maintaining both a cost and technology leadership position
for the company's broadband solutions. FTEL is currently supplying
equipment for British Telecom's DSL deployment and serves accounts
throughout Europe.
"This extension of the agreement even further strengthens our
alliance with FTEL," remarked Marc Zionts, Westell Technologies
CEO. "The long-term nature of the arrangement allows Westell to
expand and share our DSL network and central office expertise, while
at the same time enhance our capabilities in Customer Premise Equipment
area, as we help FTEL promote its end-to-end solutions."
"We believe Westell is a model partner and our exceptional
relationship will allow FTEL to increase its presence in the broadband
marketplace," said Shigeyuki Unagami, Managing Director, Fujitsu
Telecommunications Europe Ltd. "Westell's system capabilities, delivery,
and understanding of DSL's role in future networks significantly
distinguishes them from others in this industry. Our partnership
incorporates a unique blend of OEM, licensing and long-term intellectual
property sharing arrangements that will allow us to provide the
most innovative DSL solutions in the marketplace."
