Fujitsu Delivers ADSL to the Masses through the Post

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd, the leading supplier of high performance telecommunications solutions, has unveiled a new compact, low-cost, modem solution designed for fast, easy self-installation by users of ADSL services. The self-contained Fujitsu package is aimed at the mass residential market - designed for standard letterbox delivery, it comprises the new FDX310 bus-powered USB modem, microfilters, software and cables. With Fujitsu's simple plug and play installation, connecting to ADSL is now as easy as attaching a peripheral device, such as a printer or scanner.

Fujitsu is a major provider of broadband solutions and is playing a key role in the roll-out of ADSL across Britain. It has demonstrated a continuing commitment to reduce the costs of ADSL and speed up the market distribution process, through a number of initiatives. Part of this latest process has involved working with a leading UK mail-fulfilment provider to create a solution that enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and operators to supply end-users with the modems by first class mail. Fujitsu DSL Solutions Product Manager, Nigel Garnham, explains:
"The speed of deploying ADSL services, particularly in the United Kingdom, is fundamentally linked to the current need to send an engineer to visit the customer premises. We have been working for some time to find a way of overcoming this, speeding up the roll out by giving end-users the ability to connect themselves to ADSL. Our installation software is very simple to use and with the microfilters in place, customers will quickly see the benefits of an always-on broadband connection alongside their existing telephone service. This is an exciting development, which will, we believe, transform the picture of deploying ADSL to the mass residential market - underlining Fujitsu's commitment to open up new possibilities through accessible technology."

The key to the self-install concept is the availability of microfilters - simple electronic circuits that can be connected in-line with any telephone handset, preventing interference between the telephony and ADSL services. These relatively inexpensive items will become widely available as the residential ADSL market develops.

Fujitsu's market-leading broadband access equipment has been developed to provide network operators and ISPs with a choice of high-performance access solutions - from exchange-based systems, through line testing equipment to pre-check ADSL line compatibility, to corporate and residential customer premises equipment.
