Fujitsu providing high-capacity
fiber optic equipment for 360networks in Europe
Fujitsu Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) equipment delivers
up to 1.2 terabits/second
VANCOUVER, B.C. and RICHARDSON, Texas, January 30, 2001 - Fujitsu
Network Communications, Inc., today announced it is supplying 360networks
with dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) equipment for
the company's fiber optic mesh network in Europe.
Fujitsu is deploying its FLASHWAVE*320G DWDM system and FLASH*192
fiber-optic multiplexer on 360networks 10-gigabit capable system
between more than 20 cities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France,
Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Holland and Denmark. The system enables
transparent transport for 360networks leading broadband network
services.
Fujitsu Network Services is now providing full equipment installation,
turn-up, service and support on orders of approximately US $50 million
placed by 360networks in the third quarter of 2000.
"We chose Fujitsu based on its leadership in tunable lasers,
adaptive power management and other technologies which enable us
to add more capacity to our backbone network quickly and cost-efficiently,"
said Stephen Baker, chief technology officer at 360networks.
"360networks decision to use Fujitsu's optical networking equipment
in Europe reflects the confidence that service providers have in
Fujitsu," said Ron Martin, executive vice president and chief
operating officer of Fujitsu Network Communications. "We have
proven our expertise, our service and our equipment in the local
exchange market and we are now proving our vigor in the long-haul
market. Reliability is a reality with Fujitsu."
Portions of 360networks 19,300-kilometer (12,000-mile) European
network are scheduled to be lit and ready for service by the end
of March. The entire network is scheduled to enter commercial service
by the end of this year.

Details
The FLASH192 fiber-optic multiplexer and the FLASHWAVE 320G DWDM
system together provide total capacity of 320 gigabits per second
(Gbps), or the equivalent of more than four million simultaneous
voice telephone calls or Internet data connections, over a single
pair of fiber-optic cable. The FLASHWAVE 320G transmits up to 32
10 Gbps signals over the same fiber, by positioning them at slightly
different frequencies, and in-service upgrades are possible up to
120x10Gbps channels. It can transmit the signals up to 600 kilometers
without regeneration, using in-line amplifiers to refine the signals
between sites.
